Arts LIFT 2015 - Summer Studio PD

Do you need some graduate credits to renew your license? Interested in participating in an AWESOME, and SHORT learning experience where you make a fabulous piece of public art? You could take a studio course OR a community-based art education course! 

Consider registering for one of the classes described below. Elisa Gargarella and I will be leading this project through The University of Akron. We've been doing this summer project for over a decade, and it always proves to be a fantastic event.

"Visual Art Studio as Active Learning Laboratory"

8:30 am - 2:30 pm  - June 15 - 19, 2015 

This course is for art educators in grades 6-12, and those wanting to involve more arts education into your classroom. Are you looking to have time to further study “active learning” techniques? Want in-studio time to site test lessons AND time to dialogue with fellow professionals about their effective classroom strategies? This week-long course offers how to incorporate writing, brainstorming, response (critique), simple technology, and art history as a way to further motivate your learners to fully understand lessons. Studio time will be stressed. A daily critique of your own work and how it can impact your students will round out each day. A supply fee of $30 will be collected on the first day. (2 graduate credit hours)

Adobe Illustrator software defines the future of vector graphics with creative options and powerful tools for efficiently publishing artwork on the web and in print. You will learn the design tools, create simple illustrations, work with scanned images, draw and modify objects, paint with the brush tool, work with text and advanced type features, transform objects, use the pathfinder, manage colors, create masks, work with layers, use the mesh and 3D tools, and automate tasks. Class projects include creating a paper robot, web icons, photo-realistic art, a map, and a corporate identity. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills. A class fee of $30 will be paid to the instructor on the first day of class. (2 graduate credit hours)

 

Photoshop for Busy Teachers

Date and Time: Mon-Tues; June 29-30; 8:30-3:30; JC

Instructor: Li Hertzi
Credit Hours: 1

Master the basics of PhotoShop for editing and painting. This class will concentrate on an introduction to this program as an editing, painting, design, and illustration tool. You will learn layers, brush tools (basic digital painting), compositing, filters and effects, and the joy of colors in the digital world. Try PhotoShop for painting a landscape or portrait. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills. Materials fee of $30.00 paid to instructor on first class day. (1 graduate credit hour)

 

Character and Jewelry Design in 3d

Date and Time: Mon-Fri; July 20-24; 8:30-2:30; JC

Instructor: Li Hertzi
Credit Hours: 2

This class covers the basics of character design from concept to final prototyping on our 3d Makerbot printer. You will learn to draw out designs, create a Marquette in modeling clay, import it into the computer, and recreate it in a 3d program. We will explore different methods of manufacturing and making. We will also be making one small piece of jewelry, which can be made on our printer or sent to Shapeways for a silver, bronze, or other metal creation. Prerequisite: intermediate computer skills. A $75.00 materials fee to be paid to the teacher during class. (2 graduate credit hours)

Field Trip: ZERO LANDFILL Akron - Sat. Feb 21st

We will be sharing our updated 2015 calendar of events, and we already have several awesome workshops and events on the books for this year (at at locations ALL over our region).              Modern technology—from X-rays to Photoshop—

                         is not restricted to “CSI”-style crime labs.

Faked, Forgotten, Found showcases conservators’ forensic analysis of five Renaissance paintings in the museum’s collection that have undergone significant scientific analysis and conservation. The discoveries about each work are presented through extensive multimedia documentation, highlighting a fascinating but little-seen aspect of museum practice. Learn how curators and conservators discovered a portrait of Isabella de' Medici attributed to Alessandro Allori beneath the surface of a work repainted in the 19th century, or how to tell the museum’s genuine painting by Francesco Francia of the Virgin and Child apart from later imitations and copies. The exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the intersection of art and science taking place in the museum every day. 

This exhibition is organized by Lulu Lippincott, curator of fine arts, and Ellen Baxter, chief conservator.

Stark County Artists' Exhibition at the Massillon Museum

2014 Call for Entries:

Stark County Artists' Exhibition The Massillon Museum has held this annual juried show for more than 30 years. In order to apply, you must live or work in Stark County, Ohio. Stark County Artists' Exhibition will be on display: October 4, 2014 – January 4, 2015 Entry Deadline: July 20, 2014 Download full entry form, labels, and information Download the entry form and labels

ELIGIBILITY

Open to present and former Stark County residents and to those
currently working in Stark County. Entrants must be at least 18 years
of age. All media will be considered. A panel of three independent
jurors will select work to be included and prizes to be awarded.

ACCEPTABLE ARTWORK

Each artist may submit up to three digital images of artwork completed
within the past two years. If any staff or juror recognizes work suspected
to be older than two years, that piece may be disqualified from the show.

FEES

Each artist may submit up to three works. A non-refundable $10
fee per piece of artwork or $20 for three pieces of artwork must
accompany entries. Checks payable to “Massillon Museum,” Visa,
MasterCard, and Discover will be accepted. Work may be for sale;
the Museum will retain a 30% commission.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF ARTWORK

No more than two photographs of each artwork will be allowed. All
components of the artwork must be visible in original submission, Each
digital file must be 300-dpi in jpeg format. Do not superimpose any
information (including artist name) on the photographs. Digital files must
be labeled with artist’s last name and artwork title, corresponding exactly
with the name and title on the entry form. (example: monet_waterlilies)

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

Entries (on a CD or flash drive) must be delivered or mailed to the
Museum. No email entries will be accepted. A 6x9-inch self-addressed
envelope with sufficient postage must be included if a CD or drive is to
be returned, or you may pick up between January 7 and 11. No changes
can be made after submission. Submission deadline: Sunday, July 20,
2014, 4:00 p.m.

ACCEPTED WORK

Work must be completely ready to hang or display. Works on paper
must be framed under glass or plexiglass. Frames must be sturdy and
in good condition with D-rings secured to the back (no sawteeth or wires).
The Museum is not responsible for damage to improperly prepared
work. Clip and plastic box frames are not acceptable. The Museum
reserves the right to reject work that is not ready for hanging. Each
entry must be identified with a label from this brochure completely filled
out and securely attached to the back. No components that were not
part of the work upon submission may be added to accepted artwork.

ENTRY FORM

Each artist must complete one entry form and present it when submitting
materials. Labels and entry forms may be photocopied. Artists may submit,
on a separate sheet, a typed, one-paragraph explanation of their work, if
necessary, to ensure the jurors’ understanding of the medium or process.
Written material not related to artwork will not be used. Retain labels to attach
to artwork.

Awards announced: 8:00 p.m.
Free, open to the public, no reservations required
