OAEA - Call for Leader Nominations

Leadership is a rewarding experience in ways that connect you with stronger bonds to your professional community through the service you provide and the opportunity to grow that leadership returns. When you consider leadership opportunities think of your capacities in skills and availability as well as your experience and inspiration. This may be your “tipping point”, that step into new career territory. Realize your potential. OAEA is made of many voices, including yours. “You’d be great!”

At the State Level

The following 3 offices on the Executive Committee are open beginning 2016

President-Elect (one year term followed by two as President and two as Past-President)
eligibility
minimum 5 years of service on the OAEA Board of Directors
minimum 5 years of teaching experience

1st Vice President (two-year term)

Nominations for these positions are open now through the annual business meeting at our conference in November in Dayton. Voting will be concluded in December so that these new positions can be seated Jan. 1, 2016.

Contact anyone on the Nominations Committee to nominate. Nomination committee is chaired by Randy Robart, Past-President and includes Parliamentarian Sherrie Dennis and Membership Chair Suzanne Mitolo.

National Portrait Gallery - Annual Teen Portrait Competition




The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery opens a "call for entries" for the third annual Teen Portrait Competition. Artists between the ages of 13 and 17 may electronically submit portraits to the juried competition in the medium of painting and drawing, photography, and video through Wednesday, September 30 2015. The grand-prize portrait will be printed and displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in 2016.

Art teachers from Perry Local Schools are curating EC's teacher as artist show this fall entitled "Impressions".  Over thirty individuals have promised to create one work of art for this special event.  If you have not already RSVP'd to participate and would like to please contact Aimee ASAP: aimee.sauls@perrylocal.org

Location of the Show:  Journey Art Gallery 431 4th St NW, Canton OH 44702
Journey Art Gallery is open Tues-Sat 12-6.  Phone - 330-546-7061

Artwork Drop Off:  Artwork needs to be dropped off at the gallery on Wednesday, September 30th.  Artwork will be hard to store if it is dropped off too early.  Please call Su Nimon at the gallery if you need special arrangements.

Information Needed:  Please include the following information with the work, but not affixed to the work as a label.  Labels will be created using the information you provide.  Your name, where you currently teach/work/retired from, Name of the work, Medium, Is this work for sale?, What is the price that you want to get for it?

Dates/Show Opening:  The show will open on Friday, October 2nd for Canton's First Friday 6-10 pm and all the work will be displayed through Tuesday, October 13th.

Pick Up Work:  Please make arrangements to pick up your work on Wednesday, October 14th during gallery hours.

Arts LIFT 2015 - Summer Studio PD

Do you need some graduate credits to renew your license? Interested in participating in an AWESOME, and SHORT learning experience where you make a fabulous piece of public art? You could take a studio course OR a community-based art education course! 

Consider registering for one of the classes described below. Elisa Gargarella and I will be leading this project through The University of Akron. We've been doing this summer project for over a decade, and it always proves to be a fantastic event.

"Visual Art Studio as Active Learning Laboratory"
Instructor: Chris Triner 
Malone University / Johnson Center (next to the Canton main post office on Market Ave.)
8:30 am - 2:30 pm  - June 15 - 19, 2015 

This course is for art educators in grades 6-12, and those wanting to involve more arts education into your classroom. Are you looking to have time to further study “active learning” techniques? Want in-studio time to site test lessons AND time to dialogue with fellow professionals about their effective classroom strategies? This week-long course offers how to incorporate writing, brainstorming, response (critique), simple technology, and art history as a way to further motivate your learners to fully understand lessons. Studio time will be stressed. A daily critique of your own work and how it can impact your students will round out each day. A supply fee of $30 will be collected on the first day. (2 graduate credit hours)

Credit Hours: 2
Adobe Illustrator software defines the future of vector graphics with creative options and powerful tools for efficiently publishing artwork on the web and in print. You will learn the design tools, create simple illustrations, work with scanned images, draw and modify objects, paint with the brush tool, work with text and advanced type features, transform objects, use the pathfinder, manage colors, create masks, work with layers, use the mesh and 3D tools, and automate tasks. Class projects include creating a paper robot, web icons, photo-realistic art, a map, and a corporate identity. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills. A class fee of $30 will be paid to the instructor on the first day of class. (2 graduate credit hours)
 
Photoshop for Busy Teachers
Date and Time: Mon-Tues; June 29-30; 8:30-3:30; JC
Instructor: Li Hertzi
Credit Hours: 1
Master the basics of PhotoShop for editing and painting. This class will concentrate on an introduction to this program as an editing, painting, design, and illustration tool. You will learn layers, brush tools (basic digital painting), compositing, filters and effects, and the joy of colors in the digital world. Try PhotoShop for painting a landscape or portrait. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills. Materials fee of $30.00 paid to instructor on first class day. (1 graduate credit hour)
 
Character and Jewelry Design in 3d
Date and Time: Mon-Fri; July 20-24; 8:30-2:30; JC
Instructor: Li Hertzi
Credit Hours: 2
This class covers the basics of character design from concept to final prototyping on our 3d Makerbot printer. You will learn to draw out designs, create a Marquette in modeling clay, import it into the computer, and recreate it in a 3d program. We will explore different methods of manufacturing and making. We will also be making one small piece of jewelry, which can be made on our printer or sent to Shapeways for a silver, bronze, or other metal creation. Prerequisite: intermediate computer skills. A $75.00 materials fee to be paid to the teacher during class. (2 graduate credit hours)

OAEA 2015 Conference --- Call for Workshop Proposals!

 

Ask not what “Art Can…” do for you… ask what you can do for art!
- Have you been looking for new curriculum ideas to implement in your classroom? Technology? The latest materials and equipment?- Do you ever feel left out as the ONLY visual art teacher?- Want to “talk shop” with like minds?- Want to experience visual art nirvana?
 Never fear!!! It’s that time of year…
Time to submit proposals for “Art Can…” Dayton 2015!

Reasons to Submit for 2015:
- Your presentation becomes part of your OTES paperwork.- Gain administrative support and funding from your school via presenting.- You can receive an additional 1 Professional Development Unit (CEU) from OAEA for your time as a presenter.- We all have great things happening in our class-rooms, so become a platform of greatness helping colleagues learn from you.- Choose from 3 workshop types to meet your presentation needs: Standard Workshop, Hands-On Workshop, or Ticketed Event.  
The process for submitting remains online; just select the form most suitable to your needs. 
We encourage you to submit and thank you for helping aid in the professional development of Ohio’s art educators. 

The 2015 Dayton Art Can… deadline is May 1st at midnight

Field Trip: ZERO LANDFILL Akron - Sat. Feb 21st


Join us at our next regional meeting for a fabulous field trip to Zero Landfill Akron on February 21! 

We will be having a business meeting at Cracker Barrel (at the Strip) starting at 8:00 a.m. Bring money to buy breakfast! We will be sharing our updated 2015 calendar of events, and we already have several awesome workshops and events on the books for this year (at at locations ALL over our region). After breakfast, we will head up to Akron for the Zero Landfill event to get some great FREE supplies for our artworks! This year's location is that same as last year's: 530 S. Main Street, Akron, Ohio 44311

I have used so many supplies from Zero Landfill in my classroom. It's a great event. I recommend you bring a wagon, cart or dolly, along with boxes or plastic containers in which to store your free art loot!
