2018 Youth Art Month Flag & Graphic Design Contest Info

The Youth Art Month (YAM) Flag contest is both a state and national contest while the graphic contest is a statewide contest. At the state level, an overall winner is chosen from grades K-12 for the flag and the graphic contest. Their artwork is made into a flag or posters to represent Ohio. The YAM flag goes onto be displayed at the National art Education conference. The graphic design is used to promote and celebrate Youth Art Month in Ohio.
The winning students are honored in Columbus on a special day in March at a wonderful ceremony, that also includes the Youth Art Month Art Exhibition (YAM)  and Young Peoples’ Art Exhibition (YPAE) on the same day.

The students can also win at their grade level group. The groups are grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. There is a 1st, 2nd, and third place winner in each group and two honorable mentions awarded. These students are also honored on that special day in March. It’s a great time to celebrate your student’s accomplishments.

2017 Emerging HS Artists Exhibit @STRS in C-bus

The State Teachers Retirement System is hosting the Emerging Artists Exhibit, sponsored by the Ohio Art Education Association. There are 143 outstanding student works shown in the STRS building at 275 E. Broad Street Columbus Ohio.  The show opened September 11th and runs through October 21st, 2017 with a reception on Saturday October 21st at 2:00pm

At the reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, October 21, a guest speaker will remark on art and congratulations will be given for students judged with best in show for photography, drawing, mixed media, sculpture and painting.  The students who are judged for best in show also have an opportunity to win the SARGENT ART trip to New York City contest.

East Central Region artwork includes:

The OAEA High School Show is dedicated to showcasing Ohio's Emerging Artist artistic efforts, perhaps from students who have taken only one art class that may need an extra boost in their confidence.  We hope to recognize budding talent and provide a professional forum for young people to experience competition, something they will encounter in their college applications, portfolio reviews and future art careers in college.

Students who are just beginning to explore the arts in high school are welcome to exhibit their work.  The Emerging Artist show will continue to be dedicated to showcasing artistic efforts of students who have only had the chance to take one or two art classes.  We are pleased to offer a competitive professional forum as talented students prepare for their creative future in college and in an art career.

The exhibition is open to any Ohio High School student whose art teacher is a member of the OAEA.  Each member may submit a digital image of up to five works of art.  Once the work is selected, the art teacher will be notified by email.  At that time, selected art work will need to be matted and submitted to their OAEA Regional Director in late summer so that it may be delivered at the September OAEA board meeting.

Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Entries Due January 31

Entries for the 2017 Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Open -- Due January 31, 2017

Jerry Tollifson was one of the Ohio Art Education Association’s most long-standing, beloved, and influential members. His long and colorful career as an artist and educator inspired countless students and teachers across the state. The Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Open is one way his legacy continues to encourage and shape art students and teachers today.
Jerry conceived this writing competition as an annual opportunity to recognize students for their ability to articulate and compose critical responses to artworks. He promoted the idea that exercising critical thinking and careful observation while discovering an artwork’s deeper meanings empowered students to also build self-discipline and confidence. He saw the competition as another way to engage students in observing, perceiving, analyzing, and interpreting—abilities that show up repeatedly in the Ohio Fine Arts Learning Standards and National Visual Arts Standards, and also have practical relevance in other academic areas and as life skills.

This competition is open to students of all Ohio Art Education Association members in grades one through twelve. Prizes will be awarded at four division categories: Grades 1-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. Entries will be judged, blind, by three invited volunteers using the scoring rubric available on the OAEA website. Students with winning entries will be recognized at the OAEA Youth Art Month Celebration in March held at the STRS Building in Columbus. Winning entries will also be featured in an upcoming issue of ArtLine and showcased on the OAEA website.
