Crayola - COLORCYCLE Program recycles used markers

Crayola Is Transforming Used Markers Directly Into Clean Energy

Crayola is launching a nationwide used-marker recycling program in which the used markers will be directly transformed into energy. The COLORCYCLE program, as it’s been dubbed, will give students throughout the country the option of recycling any type of used marker through an in-school collection program. The markers that are collected will then be used, in combination with a “unique technology,” to create a usable fuel.

Crayola actually already has a number of other related recycling and clean energy programs. Other initiatives similar to COLORCYCLE include: utilizing solar energy for production, incorporating recycled plastics into their products, and using reforested wood for their colored pencils.
As far as the aim of the program, in their own words:
Crayola conducted extensive research into various new and emerging technologies that would allow the company to repurpose its markers and found the most efficient and beneficial solution at this time is the plastic to energy process, which allows the company to repurpose the entire marker.
As part of the “COLORCYCLE” program, Crayola developed a unique offering of classroom lesson plans that have been designed to help teachers educate their students on the important role sustainability plays in the world. The lesson plans engage students in environmental solutions, teaching them how to protect the planet in new and relevant ways, while also encouraging them to take environmental responsibility into their own hands.
Interested schools can find out more about the COLORCYCLE program — and register for it — at Crayola’s site. After registering, “participating schools will have immediate access to the classroom lesson plans, and can begin collecting any used markers,” Crayola writes. “In-school program coordinators will then be able to print out Crayola funded pre-paid FedEx shipping labels for delivery of the collected markers for conversion into usable fuel.”

OAEA Conference - Earning Professional Development Units

The air is turning cooler and it’s time to get organized: for school as well as for our professional growth and development. And the arrival of fall also means the excitement of another OAEA Professional Development Conference! This is our opportunity to get energized with new ideas, reconnect with old friends and celebrate the power of art in our and our students’ lives.

Attending the Conference offers two ways to earn the Professional Development Units (PDUs) you need for licensure. You can earn one semester graduate credit from the University of Dayton or up to 2.5 PDU’s certified through OAEA. To decide what is the best approach for you consider the following:

University of Dayton graduate credit
Education professionals working toward a master’s degree, or a master’s +30, may want to attend all two and a half days of the conference and then register their time with the University of Dayton to receive college credit. UD offers one semester credit to OAEA members for $175.00. If you are interested in receiving credit, check out the OAEA website under Professional Development to find the pdf of the college registration form. Simply follow the instructions provided. Bring the form to the registration area during the conference for certification on Saturday, November 16 from 10:30 – 12noon. After the conference, the University of Dayton will contact registered members for payment.

OAEA PDUs
Most educators need PDUs to renew or upgrade their licenses. To apply for OAEA Standard Professional Development Units go to the OAEA website under Professional Development and look for Earning PDUs. OAEA will certify up to 2.5 PDUs for full conference attendees and one PDU if you are a workshop presenter (one PDU per workshop regardless of the number of times repeated). Print the form from the website and bring the completed form to the registration area for certification on Thursday or Friday, November 14/15 from 4 – 5pm or on Saturday, November 16 from 10:30 to 12noon.

I look forward to seeing you all at this year’s conference Reflecting the Standard in Toledo!
