Youth Art Month - Flag and Graphic Design Contest 2014

YAM  2014 "Art Shapes the World"
Celebrate Youth Art Month!

Don’t wait until March to begin your celebration of Youth Art Month!  Having your students complete entries for the YAM Flag and Graphic Design Contest will give you a ready- made cache of advocacy art to send to local friends of the arts, board of education members and administrators when Youth Art Month rolls around.   Youth Art Month gives us all a chance to show how important the arts are to the success of our students.

The 2014 theme will be “Art Shapes the World”.  Students are welcome to be as creative with the idea as possible.  Flag entries should limit themselves to 8 or less colors so their design can be easily transferred to fabric.    The “Graphic Design” Category is an Ohio only contest that was added several years ago to include work that is too intricate or colorful for successful flag reproduction.  Please be sure to read and complete the rules of entry.  Entries have been disqualified due to incomplete information.

The Flag entry selected from Ohio goes to Washington D. C. and is exhibited at various venues during Youth Art Month.  Our Ohio 2013 Flag is also displayed at the STRS, at the NAEA Convention, and finally at next year’s OAEA Convention.  The winning flag is also presented to the school for permanent display.  The graphic design winning entry is made into a poster for display during Youth Art Month at the STRS and the designer and school both receive mounted posters to keep.

This two category event to celebrate YOUTH ART MONTH 2013 is sponsored by the OAEA and open to students of all current members in grades K-12.  Winners of both competitions receive special recognition and state and national exposure.
Deadline for Youth Art Month: December 19th, 2012

East Central Region Fall Report 2013

Ohio Art Education Association -- East Central Region Fall Report
Chris Bergert, Regional Director

Greetings to everyone in East Central! I hope everyone had a restful and fulfilling summer! As we prepare for a school year full of SLO’s and the OTES, remember that East Central is here for you! Our goal is to provide opportunities for art teachers to discuss, learn, and experience the best practices in art education. Keep an eye out for upcoming workshops and enrichment opportunities.

As technology becomes a bigger part of the Art room, I found a resource that compares the differences between using technology and technology integration. For example, when using technology in your classroom, is it used to instruct students on content, or is it used to engage students with content? Do you use technology to complete lower- order thinking tasks or higher -order think tasks? It’s worth the time to read and the full version is available on EC’s blog at http://ecohioarteducationassociation.blogspot.com/2013/08/teachbytes-using-technology-vs.html

Congratulations to the 2013 East Central OAEA awards recipients!

Many of our EC members will be presenting! It is a tremendous opportunity for engaging and relevant professional development from the best minds in art education.

Crayola - COLORCYCLE Program recycles used markers

Crayola Is Transforming Used Markers Directly Into Clean Energy

Crayola is launching a nationwide used-marker recycling program in which the used markers will be directly transformed into energy. The COLORCYCLE program, as it’s been dubbed, will give students throughout the country the option of recycling any type of used marker through an in-school collection program. The markers that are collected will then be used, in combination with a “unique technology,” to create a usable fuel.

Crayola actually already has a number of other related recycling and clean energy programs. Other initiatives similar to COLORCYCLE include: utilizing solar energy for production, incorporating recycled plastics into their products, and using reforested wood for their colored pencils.
As far as the aim of the program, in their own words:
Crayola conducted extensive research into various new and emerging technologies that would allow the company to repurpose its markers and found the most efficient and beneficial solution at this time is the plastic to energy process, which allows the company to repurpose the entire marker.
As part of the “COLORCYCLE” program, Crayola developed a unique offering of classroom lesson plans that have been designed to help teachers educate their students on the important role sustainability plays in the world. The lesson plans engage students in environmental solutions, teaching them how to protect the planet in new and relevant ways, while also encouraging them to take environmental responsibility into their own hands.
Interested schools can find out more about the COLORCYCLE program — and register for it — at Crayola’s site. After registering, “participating schools will have immediate access to the classroom lesson plans, and can begin collecting any used markers,” Crayola writes. “In-school program coordinators will then be able to print out Crayola funded pre-paid FedEx shipping labels for delivery of the collected markers for conversion into usable fuel.”

OAEA Conference - Earning Professional Development Units

The air is turning cooler and it’s time to get organized: for school as well as for our professional growth and development. And the arrival of fall also means the excitement of another OAEA Professional Development Conference! This is our opportunity to get energized with new ideas, reconnect with old friends and celebrate the power of art in our and our students’ lives.

Attending the Conference offers two ways to earn the Professional Development Units (PDUs) you need for licensure. You can earn one semester graduate credit from the University of Dayton or up to 2.5 PDU’s certified through OAEA. To decide what is the best approach for you consider the following:

University of Dayton graduate credit
Education professionals working toward a master’s degree, or a master’s +30, may want to attend all two and a half days of the conference and then register their time with the University of Dayton to receive college credit. UD offers one semester credit to OAEA members for $175.00. If you are interested in receiving credit, check out the OAEA website under Professional Development to find the pdf of the college registration form. Simply follow the instructions provided. Bring the form to the registration area during the conference for certification on Saturday, November 16 from 10:30 – 12noon. After the conference, the University of Dayton will contact registered members for payment.

OAEA PDUs
Most educators need PDUs to renew or upgrade their licenses. To apply for OAEA Standard Professional Development Units go to the OAEA website under Professional Development and look for Earning PDUs. OAEA will certify up to 2.5 PDUs for full conference attendees and one PDU if you are a workshop presenter (one PDU per workshop regardless of the number of times repeated). Print the form from the website and bring the completed form to the registration area for certification on Thursday or Friday, November 14/15 from 4 – 5pm or on Saturday, November 16 from 10:30 to 12noon.

I look forward to seeing you all at this year’s conference Reflecting the Standard in Toledo!
